Committees
In Rwanda Model UN conferences we have several committees, each focusing on a specific topic or area of concern, mirroring the structure of real United Nations committees and bodies.
General Assembly
The General Assembly represents the most extensive committees at YMUN and is renowned for their high intensity. In the last in-person event at ALU, these committees reverted to their larger size, closely resembling the actual United Nations counterparts. The GA addresses a diverse array of real-world issues, demanding delegates to engage in comprehensive research, champion their perspectives, and collaborate efficiently with numerous peers. This challenging environment aims to replicate the dynamics of an actual United Nations committee, providing delegates with a rich experience in diplomacy and international relations.
Disarmament and International Security Humanitarian Assistance and Refugees: While DISEC primarily focuses on preventing conflicts, it also recognizes the importance of humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of conflicts. Delegates may discuss ways to coordinate international efforts to provide aid to displaced populations, including refugees. Durable Solutions for Refugees: Durable solutions for refugees typically include voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement in a third country. DISEC can contribute to durable solutions by fostering conditions that allow for the safe and voluntary return of refugees to their home countries. Coordination with Other Committees: Since refugee issues span multiple dimensions, DISEC may need to coordinate with other committees, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or committees focusing on human rights, to ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges refugees face.
The Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) In Rwanda Model UN the committee focuses on issues related to human rights, social development, and cultural preservation. Within SOCHUM, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) plays a crucial role in addressing the plight of refugees. The committee explores strategies for safeguarding the rights and well-being of displaced populations, emphasizing the principles of asylum, protection, and durable solutions. UNHCR's involvement includes advocating for refugee rights, coordinating humanitarian aid, and collaborating with states to find sustainable solutions for refugees, such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, or resettlement. The committee discusses measures to alleviate the challenges faced by refugees, ensuring a comprehensive and human-centric approach to their protection and welfare within the broader context of social, humanitarian, and cultural issues.
